Verhältnis zu Aserbaidschan: Ich liebe dieses Land

lest ihr bitte was die weltpresse über unsere mashin-show schreibt,
auszug aus NY-TIMES 16.10.2006 :
Hands off my car!

The reality TV show craze has hit Azerbaijan hard and it could be ruining the country's work ethic. For some unknown reason the Mashin Show (translated: The Car) runs for an hour every night starting at 1 a.m. but it has no shortage of viewers and audience members, leading much of the country's exhausted workforce to spend their days discussing the program at the water cooler. Host Murad Dadashov watches over 13 young people - including some celebrities - among which is the irrepressible Roya. The rules are simple. You have to keep their hands on a car all day long. They return to a hotel at night and start anew in the morning. No bathroom breaks, nothing. Every episode one person gets voted off. The winner gets to keep the Nissan Sunny, worth about $15 k. Our fave, Roya managed to to make it to the final three before simply tossing it in, she said matter of factly, "I miss home. I have a car, so I'm leaving." Roya seemed relatively sane but the producers had to bleep out a lot of her cusswords and her sudden voluntary departure was seen as unfair to those who had tried to stay on, including rising star Ilhama Guliyeva.

The final two contestants were a comedian named Joshgun from Sumgait and a TV host named Turan. We were hoping Joshgun will walk away with the keys. But alas Turan won. Happy motoring big guy!

The same producers already have produced two seasons of another reality show called Gafas, ie: The Cage in which a dozen contestants between 18 and 30 live in a house together and the winner bags 50 million manat (about $11,000 US). There was a lot of people screaming at each other, so it was not as good as Mashin. Roya hosted the first season, but she was away in Turkey for the second, so it wasn't as good. They're hoping to make a third season but it's still not sure whether it'll be back.

Azeri eality to be mimicked on TV, intrigue to ensue

Jamil Bayramov

Gafas [The Cage], a new reality show to be launched on ATV, a local TV channel, will show the lives of 12 young men and women living captive in one house. The show will be hosted by pop star Roya. The details of life inside "the cage" will be broadcast on an hour program.
Hopefuls who applied to be on the show received an SMS which set the place for their interview. People between the ages of 18-30 could apply to be on the show. To choose the participants, producer Fuad Aliyev stressed that standout characteristics were the main aspect to which the jury paid attention.
The participants claimed that age, looks, nationality and knowledge of languages did not really play an important role.
The show is set up so that initially 13 participants will live in the same house, but as soon as the show starts the group will have to force one participant to leave immediately. After only 12 participants are left viewers will divide them into teams.
To win in The Cage, Aliyev said participants will have to gain the sympathy of the viewers. The organizers are planning to organize games and competitions to reveal their talents in full. The competitions will be conducted once a week.
"Naturally some of the spectators are going to like some participants and hate others," Aliyev said.
Another aspect of the show is that a participant can invite a local celebrity to substitute for themselves if they want to have a day off.
The celebrity guest will become a full member of the game for a day and will cook and share all daily chores with the other participants. Aliyev added that the show will be full of intrigues.
"Of course we are not going to force people fight with each other, but we expect intrigues to happen anyways.
"The participants are ordinary people and they may not like each other. We can not keep them from disputing amongst themselves.
He said that none of the producers could stop the participants from having sex with each other either. But the producers, however, insist they are not going to show sex scenes on TV.
"Kissing is the maximum we can show on TV," Aliyev said. "I think we can make the show interesting even without intimate scenes."
Talking about the bonus that awaits the participants after the reality show is over, Aliyev said that it was not the main item that attracted the participants.
"No matter if the winner takes five manat or 50 million manat ($11,100). A person who wants to participate will come anyway."
All participants will receive gifts and money bonuses if they have to leave the project early. The sum of the bonus will be connected to the number of days spent on the show.
"The more days they spend, the more money they are going to get," Aliyev said.
According to the project's script writer Ulvia Kenul, the project will attract many young people. Through the show, Kenul said the participants will see the common problems of young people and how these people on the show solve their problems could be a good example for them.
"I think the progressive section of young people will follow us and make their decision," Kenul said.
The Azeri reality show may remind viewers of the Russian reality show Dom Dva (House Two) where young people established relationships and developed them into love. He said that the Azeri producers' team went to Moscow to meet with the hosts and producers of Dom Two, a Russian reality show broadcast on TNT channel. All copyright issues have been cleared up.
Soon after the news about the reality show began to spread, many media outlets accused the program's organizers of plagiarism.
The producer, Aliyev, said that the legacy of the program is distinguished by the author's rights and licensing. "We were told if the project does not duplicate the already existing project; i.e. the number of participants and format, then the project can be implemented without any problems."
Yet Aliyev admitted there were similarities with the already existing Russian show Golod [Famine] and House Two. Just as in the Russian reality shows, the Azeris will live in a specially built house with 24 hour cameras on them.
In October, Lider TV launched another reality show Mashin [The Car] where participants had to spend a few months standing with their hand on the car they could win if they were the last man standing. The winner a Nissan Sunny donated by Nurgun Motors of Baku, which cost over $15,000.
Murad Dadashov an Azeri entertainer said that he cannot even imagine how many difficulties the reality show could cause.
Along with maintaining the creative and technical aspects of the project, Dadashov said was one of the most challenging parts of the project will be that participants have to live in an isolated hotel with a special menu taking into consideration the various tastes of the participants. About 64 people worked on the project. Dadashov said that The Car has spawned an era of reality shows in Azerbaijan.
"I think this type of program will bring more investment and the most important thing is that the viewers will stop to compare local programs with foreign ones. We believe that we can make that real," Dadashov said.
