Apprenticeship... like an intern you mean?  Nope.  You need a high school diploma which is 29 credits in Manitoba... unless you become a famous rock star or something, you're not gonna get any jobs better than Petland (a pet store) if you don't have a diploma.

I see, but what´s if you want to become a mechanic or joiner or something like that? Do you have to go to school for such a long time aswell??

if you want to do a specific career ... or actually, I should say, if you know what you want to do at that point (which not many high school kids do), you select your college according to what best fit your future plans.  A lot of kids just go to whatever college and see what interests them, while others, who are set on what they want to do (a mechanic for example), they go to colleges and universities with a good engineering program.  I'm currently hunting around for a place with a good music program ... and affordable ... would be nice as well.

In America, there are just so many choices for so many things.  I think it can be nice at times, but it leaves a lot of people in a lot of confusion ...  A lot of people just can't decide what they want to do.  I agree with the principle of letting people choose for themselves, but it's not working out very well ... the system needs some work.

Well, it depends which auto shop would hire an undergrad or a high school drop-out... let's just say, for any job, you need at least a high school diploma!

I can´t understand that really, because I think a skilled workman doesn´t need a high school diploma! Here in Austria it´s totally different -  people who´d like to learn a certain non-academic profession go to a company after their 9 compulsory schoolyears and become an apprentice there. They learn all they have to learn for their profession at the company in a period of 3 or 4 years and they have to attend a special profession-school for some months between each year... after these 3 or 4 years (depends on which profession) they have completed there training and have to pass an exam. They can stay or leave company to work! So no high school diploma at all...

that's really a smart idea.  I wish they would do it a little more over here.  I'm already set on what I want to do, but I have all these classes that I HAVE to take or else I can't graduate high school, and if I don't graduate, I can't go to any of the colleges that I want to go to study music.  Unless you're a child prodigy, you really can't do much.

But the reason why America and Canada (I guess?) do it this way is because some people can't just choose what they want to do at a young age.  Some people don't even know what they want to do even when in college.  It doesn't really satisfy the whole margin though, and I think that's the problem.

Anyway ... that was a semi-rant.

I hope you're all having a good day .. haha

It´s true - we have to choose at very young age! The first at the age of 10... Our government wants to change it now, but I find our system not as bad as it´s talked about. They´d like to have a comoprehensive school in the future, but I don´t like this idea at all!
