Women in Islam are equal to men. They have rights and duties just like men.

Poeple of other religions often misunderstand the rule of the woman in Islam and think they have no rights, but this is wrong.

Anyone wishing to understand Islam must first separate the religion from the cultural norms and style of a society.

The correct approach to understand the Islamic view of women

To understand the Islamic view of women it is critical to draw from the original sources and not from interpretations or particular practices. I wish therefore to draw the contrast between the origins of Islamic teaching which is the Koran and the Sunna or Hadith and cultural practices.

I should comment here regarding the issue of Sharia law which is often confused with Islamic thought and teaching on womens human rights. Sharia is not a set body of laws like the 10 Commandents written in tablets of stone, but is open to interpretation and reinterpretation. Of course, as in all religions, the interpretation of religious laws orpractices are dependent upon the times and contexts in which they develop.

The Koran is addressed to all Muslims, and for the most part it does not differentiate between male and female. Man and woman, it says were created of a single soul, and are moral equals in the sight of God. Women have the right to divorce, to inherit property, to conduct business and to have access to knowledge.

Since women are under all the same obligations and rules of conduct as the men, differences emerge most strongly when it comes to pregnancy, child bearing and rearing, menstruation and to a certain extent, clothing.

Women and men both should try to have a harmonious relationship. While the woman most likely is a stay at home mom, the man goes to work and is the head of the house. Even though the man is physically stronger than a woman, a man should never start being abusive to his wife or kids. Even the prophet muhammed, peace be on him  never behaved in a disrespectful manner towards his family or anyone else. The Koran is very clear about abusive actions. It is disliked, to treat person in disrespectul manner.

Nowaydays, many women go to work theirselves, because of many aspects. Everything is more expensive, they want a better life.

The money of just one working person is today not enough to satisfy all the wishes one might have. It is sometimes not even enough to live.

In my opinion it is not wrong for a woman to work as long as the needs of her family are met.

And both man and woman can work on a harmonious relationship and help each other to make things work.

Many people from other beliefs misunderstand a muslim marriage with polygamy. A muslim can marry to 4 women, but he has to treat them equaly. It is very hard to do that, that's why a muslim most likey will only have one wife. Plus when the prophet muhammed had many wives, then it was not because it was so nice to just have a couple wives for fun. It was more for charity. Those women who he had married were mostly widows. Which man would marry 4 widows nowadays? Anyway thats why it is wrong to think that muslims simply marry 4 women for their conveinance and fun, it is just WRONG.
