United charges $125 each way to bring your pet along with you in the cabin, although you'll be on the hook for an additional $125 if your layover is long. Domestic layovers of more than four hours and international layovers of more than 24 hours will charge this extra fee.

Does United Airlines allow pets?

Traveling with pets in-cabin is only allowed for cats and dogs when there's space available. Each customer can travel with up to two pets. If you're traveling with two pets, you must purchase two seats on your flight. Your second seat needs to be next to your assigned seat so you can care for both pets.

Is United strict with pets?

United Airlines has no weight or breed restrictions for cats and dogs as long as they are in an approved hard or soft-sided carrier, measuring 17.5 inches long by 9 inches tall and 12 inches wide for a hard carrier, or 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide for a soft carrier.

How much does it cost to fly with a dog?

Generally, airlines charge a pet fee of $100 to $200 each way, but prices will vary depending on where you're traveling and your airline. Check the airline's pet policy before purchasing a ticket to make sure your pet meets the airline's breed and size requirements.

Does United require a pet health certificate?

If your dog is too big to fly in-cabin, they will have to fly through United Airline's PetSafeŽ program (see below). United Airlines' dog travel policy requires all dogs to have a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination from their vet.

Carry-On Pets

United Airlines allows small dogs, cats, and household birds to travel in the cabin. There is a one-way fee for this service, which must be paid at check-in. The current rate is $95 USD/CAD for tickets issued after February 28, 2022. For tickets issued before this date, the fee was $125 USD/CAD. Pets must be kept in a soft-sided, ventilated kennel that can fit under the seat directly in front of you.

The United Airlines pet policy ++𝟙-𝟠𝟑𝟑-𝟒𝟔𝟑-5𝟐𝟜𝟓
United Airlines' pet policy restricts the transportation of pets in cargo, with exceptions solely for members of the U.S. military and foreign service. Under these conditions:

Active U.S. military personnel on permanent change of station orders may transport their pet cats and dogs only on flights between Honolulu and Guam.
Similarly, Foreign Service Personnel on current reassignment orders are entitled to the same cargo privileges for their pets.
Previously, through the PetSafe program, United Airlines permitted the transportation of pets as cargo on selected flights. This program was discontinued in 2018, and there have been no indications of its resumption by United Airlines.

United in-cabin pet options ++𝟙-𝟠𝟑𝟑-𝟒𝟔𝟑-5𝟐𝟜𝟓
Since the discontinuation of United's PetSafe program, in-cabin travel options for pets have become more restricted. However, pets are still allowed in the cabin under the following conditions:

Only cats and dogs are permitted.
Pets must comfortably fit in a kennel, which must not exceed specified dimensions and must be placed under the seat in front of you.
Kittens and puppies must be at least two months old for domestic flights and four months old for international flights.
Pets cannot accompany unaccompanied minors.
The pet owner must be present on the flight.
In-cabin pet travel is restricted to certain destinations and cabin classes.
United charges a fee of $125 each way for in-cabin pets. An additional $125 fee applies for layovers exceeding four hours on domestic flights and 24 hours on international flights.

United Airlines' pet carrier requirements++𝟙-𝟠𝟑𝟑-𝟒𝟔𝟑-5𝟐𝟜𝟓
United Airlines accommodates both hard-sided and soft-sided pet carriers under its pet policy. For hard-sided carriers, the dimensions must not exceed 17.5 inches in length, 12 inches in width, and 7.5 inches in height. Soft-sided carriers are recommended to be no larger than 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches high. The crucial requirement for all carriers, whether hard-sided or soft-sided, is that they must fit under the seat in front of you.

United's policy also specifies that only one pet is allowed per carrier. Moreover, it is important that the pet can comfortably stand up and turn around within the carrier, ensuring its wellbeing during the flight.

United Airlines' pet cargo policy++𝟙-𝟠𝟑𝟑-𝟒𝟔𝟑-5𝟐𝟜𝟓
United Airlines currently prohibits the transportation of pets in cargo. This policy follows the suspension of their PetSafe program, which previously allowed pets to travel as cargo. The program was halted after incidents resulting in tragic outcomes for some pets. As of now, there is no clear indication of whether or when the PetSafe program might be reinstated.

++𝟙-𝟠𝟑𝟑-𝟒𝟔𝟑-5𝟐𝟜𝟓How to use the United pet policy?
United Airlines offers several methods for including a pet in your travel plans. If you are planning a new trip, you can directly book your flight with a pet using the designated link for pet travel. For those who have already booked their flight, you can add a pet to your itinerary by navigating to your existing reservation on the United website.
