My cat Alex has been sick for over 2 weeks. I had him to the vet a couple of days after he got sick and the vet gave him a shot of antibiotics that should last for 2 weeks. This started working in about a week but he only felt better for a couple of days and now he is not moving again. I can hear that his nose is stuffed and he has no voice. When the vet checked him out almost 2 weeks ago she said that everything was fine, hear rate, BP, no lumps or sensitive areas, and his blood work was good too. He did have a fever though which is why she gave him the antibiotics.
Now he is once again curled up in a ball in a corner of the bedroom and won't come out. If I bring him wet food, he will eat a little but no dry and he loves his dry food. I called the vet again last week and she said I could come in for liquid antibiotics. I have been giving it to him for 3 days and I don't see much of a change. She also told me that I can give him some Childrens Benadryl to clear his head up after I told her that his nose is "whistling" when he breaths. I cannot figure out what this is! It's been going on for much too long. Three of my other cats also got sick after Alex did but they are over it already without antibiotics, including a 5 month old kitten, who we think brought the bug in with him.

I am hoping some of you can give me some suggestions about what might be wrong with this cat. He is only 4 and since I rescued him from starving to death on the streets three years ago, he has had no health problems.

Also, can someone tell me how much Childrens Benadryl I should give him, he weighs 16lbs.

Thanks so much. Any help will be very much appreciated.

At this point if he is not improving I would recommend asking your vet for a Culture/sensitivity where they swab his nose/throat and send it to an outside lab for analysis to see what bacteria you are dealing with and which antibiotic would be best suited for it. As for the Benadryl, it rarely works well in cats so I wouldn't recommend it. You can put him in the bathroom with the shower on hot to steam the room, that will help with congestion. You can give him Lysine which helps with respiratory problems. You can give 1000mg twice a day while he is sick then 500mg twice a day for maintenance.

The amount of benedryl is a lot. I have found taking your cat into the bathroom and running a stream shower for a few minutes or a vaporizer with Vicks for a longer period works well to clear up things resulting in some sneezing that will clear things, similar to a human and nasal spray. I had a cat I couldn't really get into the shower so the vaporizer followed him around for a couple days. After maybe 2 days you will see the improvement. It is a lot safer then benedryl.

Thank you both for your quick reply. There has to be something else going on here besides a virus because the other cats shook it off in less than a week. I will try the hot water in the bathroom thing tonight. He doesn't seem to be dehydrated, so that is good, although he is not coming into the bathroom with me to drink, unless he is doing it when I am sleeping, which is strange for him.
I will talk to the vet about the swabbing test and also ask her to do an allergy test. I just don't know if I can afford all this. I am living on my disability and I have already run up a $600 bill with him. The kitten I adopted from a rescue was supposed to have been checked out by a vet before I got him but it seems that all they did was fix him and gave him his first round of shot. They never actually "checked him out" or they could not have missed this all this stuff he had. By the time I got him, he had the beginnings of a URI, an eye infection, the dirtiest, infected ears I have ever seen on any animal I have rescued from the street, AND after the first week I had him I noticed some spots on his ears where the fur was growing back in. I brought him in again and sure enough, RINGWORM! I wanted to strangle the woman from the rescue who told me that this kitten was actually born in her house because it was the mother that was found and she was pregnant. This adorable little kitten now put all 4 of my other cats in danger of getting it and who knows what virus he must have had that we didn't even know about because my cats started getting sick 5 weeks after he got here, even though he was quarantined for a month in my bedroom. And of course I now have ringworm too but it's almost gone.

I guess the antibiotics are finally working. Alex came out sometime in the night to sleep on my bed where he usually is. And he ate his breakfast and drank a lot of water today. Thank God. He has lost of bit of weight but otherwise he looks much better. Whew!

If your vet suggested Benadryl, then you can give a small amount of this medicine in syrup form. This medication is suitable to treat several kinds of allergies, insomnia and further symptoms of a cold. Hence, if you are confused about dosage, then it is better to act upon the advice of your vet.

On the other hand, your cat loves dry food, but you should use wet food from this list https://www.catfoodpoint.com/best-wet-cat-food/ because dry food is considered harmful for cats for many reasons. It is bad for heart and tummy health. Mainly, when your cat is sick, you should prefer wet food or combine it with home food.

I hope your cat will get well soon
