I’m feeling slightly euphoric. Last night I discovered this zany guy’s site. Apparently he is a huge Paradroid fan and has gone to the extreme measure of decompiling it, fixing all the bugs, improving some routines, putting in some dead cool elements from Paradroid 90 and making everything meaner and faster, while keeping all the good stuff and making the other stuff better. Radar is now somewhat useful (if you have it – stand still for 2 seconds, and a small arrow pops up on your droid showing you the way to the next enemy), the consoles offer some nifty statistics, enemy behaviour under alert status is supposedly more intelligent, big firefights don’t slow down the game to a crawl anymore, highscores are saved, you can revisit previously reached ships when starting a new game, etc etc.
He called it Paradroid Redux and put it up for download as a c64 disk image. It has now reached beta state, and is working like a charm. Made me whoop and bouce up and down for several minutes.
