European Stability Initiative
The ESI was founded in June 1999 in Sarajevo. Its founders, multi-national practitioners and analysts, were members of international organisations like the OSCE, the United Nations or the World Bank.[1] It was founded "in recognition of the need for independent, in-depth analysis of the complex issues involved in promoting stability and prosperity in Europe". Currently the ESI consists of 23 members, including analysts and editors. Chairman is Gerald Knaus, an Austrian sociologist.

The ESI is among others financed by governments and foundations from Scandinavia and Ireland, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung[2] and the German Marshall Fund. The ESI has a monthly budget of 45.000 Euro.[1] To date, the ESI has produced more than 62 reports.[3]

All the publications of the European Stability Initiative are widely distributed and available on its website free of charge in order to promote discussion and debate among the policy community.
