University students from the Gaza Strip on Sunday threw imitation diplomas into the Mediterranean Sea to symbolize their lost collegiate dreams, they told Ma'an.

Many students who study outside Gaza have all but given up hope of catching up with their college credits after being stranded in Gaza for months due to the closure of Egypt's Rafah crossing with the Strip.

In response, dozens decided to throw symbolic diplomas into the sea in protest against the jointly enforced Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza

Israeli drone maker Elbit targeted as UK activists close second factory

At 5am this morning, Palestine solidarity campaigners shut down a factory in Britain owned by the Israeli arms firm Elbit.

At the time of publication, four of the activists are on the rooftop of the plant – located in the English county of Kent – and others are gathered in front, with one locking onto the fence. Though operating under the name Instro Precision, the factory is owned by Elbit, a leading supplier of drones to the Israeli military.

One of the protesters, Tom Anderson, told The Electronic Intifada over the phone that “no workers have come in.” He said police were stopping and checking cars that wanted to enter the industrial estate the factory is part of, and have apparently told the company not to send its staff in.

He said police had initially stolen some of their water and food supplies, but had later backed off when journalists had arrived at the scene.

Palestinian girl injured after being hit by settler vehicle in Silwan

A Palestinian girl suffered fractures and bruises Tuesday after being hit by a settlement guard's jeep in the Ein al-Lawza area of the Silwan neighborhood in East Jerusalem, family said.

Mariam Karim Dana, 10, was hit as the vehicle was speeding between houses, Dana's brother Amer said.

He said the car stopped after Mariam fell down, but backed up again, hitting her leg.

Israeli police arrived at the scene but allowed the driver to leave without being detained or questioned.

Settlers burn mosque near Bethlehem

Extremist Jewish settlers set fire overnight Tuesday to a mosque in the southern West Bank town of al-Jaba west of Bethlehem, locals told Ma'an.

As worshipers arrived around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday to prepare for the dawn prayer at al-Huda mosque, they saw smoke and flames rising from inside the building.

Worshipers alerted neighbors and together they joined forces until they managed to put out the fire.

Racist slogans calling for killing Arabs and Muslims were sprayed on the walls in Hebrew.

Purim, the Jewish holiday that happened a few days ago is a strange one. It’s an amalgam of genocide and celebration, drunken revelry, hitting perfect strangers in the street (with toy hammers), raucous noise, and donning crazy costumes. It’s a little bit Halloween and a little big Super Bowl. But there’s a dark underlying savagery to this holiday. That’s because, according to the Book of Esther, the king’s advisor, Haman, plots the extermination of the Jews of Persia. He fails and in the process it is his entire family and supporters who are wiped out on scaffolds erected throughout the kingdom, originally meant for the Jews. There is no other way to describe this than genocide. What other holiday you can think of celebrates mass murder?

She is a young Israeli-Palestinian who grew up among Moroccan Jews in Dimona. Her politics during this period were exceedingly right-wing. And today, they still bear traces of that upbringing. She speaks Hebrew with no Palestinian accent, dresses like a hip Tel Avivit, and bears no semblance of her ethnic roots. Her politics around the Palestinian conflict are typically liberal Zionist (“We have other things to get over besides the occupation and discrimination”). It’s a problem not of her making nor is it her responsibility to fix it or speak on anyone’s behalf but her own.
