Israel hat am Dienstag den tunesischen Expräsidenten Moncef Marzouki und die spanische Europapolitikerin Ana Miranda Paz abgeschoben, die sich an der Gaza-Hilfsflotte beteiligt hatten. Auch 14 weitere ausländische Teilnehmer sollen kurzfristig ausgewiesen werden. Die israelische Marine hatte die »Freiheits-Flottilla III« am Montag kurz vor Erreichen der Gewässer des Gazastreifens gestoppt und das schwedische Schiff »Marianne von Göteborg« nach Israel gebracht; die übrigen Schiffe der Hilfsflotte drehten wieder ab. Der arabisch-israelische Parlamentsabgeordnete Bassel Ghattas wurde in Aschdod nach einem Polizeiverhör freigelassen. Ghattas bezeichnete das Vorgehen der Kriegsmarine gegen das schwedische Schiff als illegal. Letztlich sei das Hauptziel der Freiheitsflottille erreicht worden, die lokale und internationale Aufmerksamkeit auf die humanitäre Krise im Gazastreifen zu lenken, so Ghattas.

Israel once again commits an act of state piracy in the Mediterranean

today (Gaza time) the “Marianne” contacted Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) and informed us that three boats of the Israeli navy had surrounded her in international waters, while sailing approximately 100NM from Gaza coast. After that we lost contact with the “Marianne” and at 05:11AM (Gaza time) the IDF announced that they had “visited and searched” Marianne. They had captured the boat and detained all on board “in international waters” as they admitted themselves. The only positive content in the IDF announcement was that they still recognize that there is a naval blockade of Gaza, despite Netanyahu’s government recent denial that one exists.

We have no reason to believe that Marianne’s capture was “uneventful”, because the last time the IDF said something like that, in 2012, the people on board the “Estelle” were badly tasered and beaten with clubs. Back in 2010, ten passengers of Mavi Marmara were murdered by the IDF during a similar operation in international waters.

Israeli forces have detained 550 Palestinians from the Hebron district of the occupied West Bank since the start of 2015, the Palestinian Palestinian Prisoners' Society's Hebron branch reported Thursday.

The group of detainees included seven women and 105 teenagers, head of the Hebron branch Amjad Najjar told Ma'an, adding that 225 of the detainees were sentenced without trial through Israel's frequent use of administrative detention.

Among the detainees, according to Najjar, were 78 patients “who faced a real life threat as a result of detention” due to not receiving "any medical treatment at all" in Israeli custody.

Books by former intelligence, military and political leaders are frequently tedious and self-serving. Obsessed with securing their own legacy, and proving how right they were about some long-standing grudge or another, such volumes rarely make for much of an enlightening read.

One such book I probably will subject myself to, however, is titled Periphery by the former Israeli spy Yossi Alpher. For all the tediousness one has to wade through in such propagandising dross, there are sometimes a few nuggets of insight – usually given away unintentionally.

The Israeli security agency claims that under interrogation, she said the funds were used to purchase her brother “an elegant apartment” and “fancy car.” This makes absolutely no sense. Why would she need to go to the danger of smuggling funds into an Israeli prison when she could’ve bought the items herself on his behalf?

Al-Hafi also allegedly told interrogators that the funds were transferred from a Hamas charity, Al Noor, which is dedicated to helping the families of shahids, prisoners, and those wounded in Israeli attacks. In other words, the Shin Bet is attempting to plant the notion that al-Hafi and her brother are corrupt and misusing Hamas charity funds.

Another bizarre feature of this prosecution is that the victim is being charged under Israeli law with “contact with a foreign agent” when she isn’t an Israeli citizen and her “crime” isn’t a crime in Gaza itself, where she lives. If Israel annexed Gaza and proclaimed sovereignty over it and charged Gazans with crimes under Israeli law, that would be one thing. But they’re treating Gazans as if they’re under Israeli sovereignty when they’re not (supposedly).

Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man during clashes that broke out following an Israeli raid into the town of Birqin west of Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday morning.

Muhammad Ahmad Alawneh, 21, was shot with a live bullet in his chest.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment where he underwent surgery, but later succumbed to his wounds, medical sources told Ma'an.

Alawneh is the 16th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces this year.

Palestinian prisoner held in solitary confinement for over 4 years

Palestinian prisoner Dirar Abu Sisi is still being held by Israeli authorities in solitary confinement since his detention began over four years ago, a prisoners' rights groups reported.

The Palestinian Prisoners' Society said Wednesday that Abu Sisi told his lawyer that Israeli authorities are imposing several sanctions on him, including preventing him from receiving family visits in the Nafha jail where he is currently detained.

PPS added that an Israeli court had recently sentenced Abu Sisi to 21 years of jail.

Israeli forces shot and killed a 53-year-old Palestinian and injured his two sons during an arrest raid in the town of Beit Ummar in northern Hebron early Thursday, witnesses said.

Falah Hammad Abu Maria is the 17th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces this year, three of whom have been killed since the beginning of this month.

A spokesperson for a local popular committee, Muhammad Ayyad Awad, told Ma'an that Israeli forces and undercover forces had raided Falah’s house and opened live fire inside the home.

Witnesses said the forces shot and injured his son Muhammad, 22, with two live bullets in the pelvis.

sraeli forces on Monday shot and killed a Palestinian teenager during an arrest raid in the Qalandiya refugee camp near Ramallah, Palestinian medics said.

Locals said that Israeli military vehicles raided the camp early Monday and broke into the home of Muhammad Abu Latifa, 18, in an attempt to detain him.

Israeli forces then opened fire on the teenager as he attempted to run away.

Israeli police said that Abu Latifa was shot in the leg as he was running away across a roof, then fell to his death as he tried to leap to another roof.

The savage burning alive of 18-month-old Palestinian baby Ali Dawabsha in the occupied West Bank village of Duma has elicited energetic condemnations from Israeli leaders.

To anyone paying attention to the widespread expressions of hatred emanating from many quarters of Israeli Jewish society, these stern platitudes are not only unconvincing, they are an obvious handwashing performance meant for external consumption.

Last week, the internet and press was alive with outrage over the illegal killing of a lion named Cecil in Zimbabwe. Cecil, a local favorite among tourists and local people, was callously shot with a bow and arrow and left to suffer for 40 hours before his life was ended with a bullet. He was then decapitated and skinned so that his killer could take his body parts as a “trophy.” Since then, the hunter, identified as US dentist, Walter Palmer, has gone into hiding, and there have been calls for his extradition to Zimbabwe to face charges for the illegal hunt.

Conservationists and animal protectionists have suggested that Cecil’s tragic death may not be in vain as governments around the world begin to discuss the potential of banning the import of hunting “trophies,” a move which could curb the killing of more lions on the African continent. Whilst mourning the death of Cecil, the Palestinian Animal League (PAL) team that I am part of is delighted that his legacy may serve to protect other members of his species, and to prevent further mindless and cruel deaths occurring in future.

But this outrage at the killing of a lion comes with a backlash. It is difficult to avoid comparing the death of one lion to the death of other individuals, who have not been given even a fraction of the attention Cecil’s death has generated. Vegan activists took to the internet to demand that if people are so concerned about the death of Cecil, they should turn their attention to the millions of animals killed daily for food. In relation to the death of people, meanwhile, former UK MP George Galloway stated that “Palestinian blood is cheap” when he predicted that the death of 18-month-old Ali Dawashba, who was burned alive by settlers near Nablus on Friday, would be unlikely to stir the international outrage that the death of Cecil did. He is probably right.

You may have seen news stories surrounding baby Ali’s death on Friday. Unless you followed the story in detail, you might not have seen that, later that evening, during violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli armed forces, a young man was shot. He died a few hours later in hospital. His mother, a nurse, and his father were by his side. His name was Laith -- which means “lion” in Arabic. Laith was seventeen years old and described as “carrying a smile wherever he went.” He had his whole life ahead of him and a loving family. He was buried on Saturday after his young life was cut short by a bullet. His father has supported the work of PAL and has been instrumental in establishing a volunteer group for us in Bir Zeit University, where he works. He is a personal friend of our team, a friend of the organization, and a staunch supporter of our work for animals. Laith’s cousin works with us as a volunteer. Our hearts go out to the family as they begin to move forward without their beloved boy.
