Fateh’s 7th Congress shows how far the movement has sunk — reduced to choosing between two disastrous options: Abbas or Dahlan.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had a great opportunity to begin making some badly needed changes at the just-concluded 7th Congress of Fateh, the dominant Palestinian political grouping and mainstay of the PLO. But — judging by the Congress’ outcomes, the identity of the delegates and the criteria by which they were chosen, the discussions they held on its side-lines or behind closed doors and their reactions — it was an opportunity squandered. http://www.bariatwan.com/english/?p=2212
Where is Fatah Headed after Its Seventh Congress?
After years of holding the Palestinian struggle hostage to their factional-feud, the current enemy of Palestinian unity today is not just the Fatah-Hamas dispute. According to Mouin Rabbani, writing in Al Jazeera, another pressing problem is the power struggle within Fatah itself.
It is unfortunate that the Palestinian leadership often substitutes its failure to address one problem by inviting another. When it comes to leadership, historically, the Palestinian people have always been ill-fated. http://www.palestinechronicle.com/where-is-fatah-headed-after-its-seventh-congress/
Hold Your Applause, Fatah: The Palestinian Body Politic is Rotten to the Core
In July 2003, the then Palestinian Authority Chairman, Yasser Arafat, described Mahmoud Abbas as a “traitor” who “betrayed the interests of the Palestinian People.” Arafat loathed Abbas to the very end. This particular outburst was made during a meeting with United Nations envoy Terje Larsen. The meeting took place a few months after Arafat was coerced by the US, Israel and other Western powers to appoint Abbas as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. http://www.palestinechronicle.com/hold-your-applause-fatah-the-palestinian-body-politic-is-rotten-to-the-core/
Abbas the Politician Spoils It for Abbas the Statesman
(Dieser Artikel wurde von Amira Hass geschrieben , aber stehe in Hareetz nur für Abos...) http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/.premium-1.756739
In his speech to Fatah delegates, the Palestinian president implied that his people should abandon armed struggle and focus on attainable goals. Yet his power doesn't stem from this stance but from his control of funds and jobs. The Mahmoud Abbas that Fatah delegates discussed among themselves (or when talking to journalists) at the seventh Fatah conference this week is a wily and clever politician. He managed to oust opponents from his party while pushing others to the margins, as well as allowing resolutions made by his own Central Committee to fizzle out – such as the cessation of security cooperation with Israel. http://kbnews.eu/bdm-news/1783-abbas-the-politician-spoils-it-for-abbas-the-statesman
Killing Arafat: Does Abbas have any evidence?
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has revived long-standing suspicions that his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, was murdered. Abbas announced last week that he knew the killer’s identity, adding that the world would be “amazed when you know who did it”.
Abbas made the unexpected announcement during a commemoration, marking the 12th anniversary of Arafat’s death, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, where the former Palestinian leader is buried. http://www.jonathan-cook.net/2016-11-17/killing-arafat-abbas-evidence/
As Fatah meets, a time bomb ticks in Palestinian camps
The Palestinian camps are on edge. Often they are subject to raids and arrests by the Palestinian Authority (PA), as its forces try to locate those it accuses of murder, arms smuggling and drug trafficking.
But those clashes have carried more political weight this year, as Fatah’s seventh conference, which began in Ramallah on Tuesday, decides the future direction of the organisation. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/palestinian-camps-fatah-meets-time-bomb-ticks-987989243
Is rapprochement underway between Palestinian rivals Dahlan, Hamas?
The recent rapprochement between Hamas and dismissed Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan and the "Democratic Reformist Current," which Dahlan formed with some Fatah leaders after his dismissal in 2011, was predicted. Dahlan has been repeatedly praising Hamas — most recently during an interview with Dream TV Egypt on Oct. 23 when he implied that rapprochement with Hamas is the solution to all of Gaza’s problems. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/10/rapprochement-between-hamas-and-fatah-dismissed-dahlan.html
Has Fatah put Dahlan secession to rest?
At times, it has seemed as if Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were trying single-handedly to fend off pressure from friend and foe to reinstate the expelled renegade Mohammed Dahlan in Fatah's ranks or continue to postpone the movement's long-anticipated congress. If Abbas felt lonely before the congress, he didn’t feel at all isolated after it convened Nov. 29, also the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Abbas, who was scheduled to give a speech on the opening day, decided midway through the evening to postpone it so the 60 delegates from 28 countries could show the world how much support he and Fatah have. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/12/fatah-seventh-congress-abbas-regional-international-support.html
How Peres' funeral highlighted rift among Israeli Arabs
The decision by Knesset members of the Joint List of predominantly Arab parties to boycott the funeral of former President Shimon Peres on Sept. 30 continues to stir deep emotions among Israel’s Arab citizens. Many see it as the latest in a string of moves by party members that is deepening the rupture between them and the country’s Jewish society. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/10/israel-peres-funeral-highlights-rift-within-israeli-arabs.html
Why 30 Palestinians celebrated Jewish holiday with settlers
Following the participation of a group of Palestinians in a holiday celebration at a nearby Jewish settlement, Palestinians have been asking themselves a simple question: Why would a population under occupation that bears the brunt of the settlement enterprise visit their occupiers? http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2016/10/west-bank-jewish-settlments-palestinians-visit.html
Palestinian with Israeli citizenship shot dead in Galilee-area town
A Palestinian with Israeli citizenship was shot dead in the town of Kafr Kanna in northern Israel on Saturday.
Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri identified the slain Palestinian as 48-year-old Anan Hakroush, adding in her statement that Hakroush was shot while in a private vehicle near the Mercantile Bank in the Galilee.
According to al-Samri, he was found with several gunshot injuries in his vehicle and was evacuated to a hospital near Tiberias, where he was later pronounced dead.
Local sources in Kafr Kanna told Ma’an that the victim’s uncle Jamal Hakroush is a high-ranking official in the Israeli police, in charge of improving police services in Palestinian neighborhoods in Israel.
Palestinian-majority neighborhoods in Israel have seen an increase in gun violence in recent years, while members of the Arab Joint List of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, have called on authorities to crack down on illegal weapons in Israel’s Palestinian communities, where there is a disproportionate lack of policing compared to Jewish-majority neighborhoods. http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=774036
Why Palestinian camp is protesting Lebanese 'wall of shame'
Abu Sherif Aqul sits back on the row of dark leather chairs, the table in front of him lined with neat glass bottles of pineapple juice. "The wall being built around Ain al-Hilweh is like the one built by the Israelis,” he says forcefully. The sheikh from the Salafist faction Usbat al-Ansar is clearly being diplomatic about the structure that the Lebanese Army has started building around his home. But the frustration is there. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/wall-shame-palestinian-camp-protests-lebanon-barrier-plan-78914773
