The Israeli patriot’s final refuge: boycott

We have considered the alternatives. A boycott is the least of all evils, and it could produce historic benefits. It is the least violent of the options and the one least likely to result in bloodshed. It would be painful like the others, but the others would be worse.

On the assumption that the current status quo cannot continue forever, it is the most reasonable option to convince Israel to change. Its effectiveness has already been proven. More and more Israelis have become concerned recently about the threat of the boycott. When Justice Minister Tzipi Livni warns about it spreading and calls as a result for the diplomatic deadlock to be broken, she provides proof of the need for a boycott. She and others are therefore joining the boycott, divestment and sanction movement. Welcome to the club.

Am Donnerstag, den 14ten März 2012 um ca. 18.30 Uhr, raste ein Auto in den hinteren Teil eines Lastwagens auf der Road 5 im Salfit District im besetzten Palästina. Die Fahrerin und ihre drei Töchter wurden verletzt, eine von ihnen schwer. Der Unfall passierte, also Adva Biton auf ihrem Weg zurück zu der illegalen Siedlung Yakir war. Im Nachzug gab sie an, dass der Unfall durch Steine werfende Palästinensische Jugendliche verursacht wurde. Der Lastwagenfahrer der angab, dass er aufgrund eines platten Reifens am Fahrbahnrand angehalten hatte, fügte erst einer späteren Aussage hinzu, Steine auf der Fahrbahn gesehen zu haben.

Es gibt keine Augenzeugen und niemand sonst gab an, an dem Tag Kinder oder Jugendliche gesehen zu haben, die Steine geworfen hätten.

"I refuse to take an assault rifle and point it at another human being. I abhor this violence and everything connected to violence. I detest and hate all violence," he told Amnesty International.

"I don't want to be part of the Israeli army because the Israeli government is responsible for the occupation. As an Arab Druze I consider myself part of the Palestinian people - so how can I be part of the army that occupies my people? I won't sell all my beliefs and my identity to anyone."

Every year, a handful of Israeli teenagers are sent to prison for refusing to serve in the Israeli army on grounds of conscience, Amnesty says.

Although Druze communities are conscripted into Israel's military, many have refused to serve on the grounds that they would be fighting a war against their own people.

"The loneliness of the prison cell is one thousand times better than standing in front of my people while pointing a gun at them, or imposing a curfew on them," Ajuad Zidan, a former Druze objector, said after refusing to enlist in 2010.

A Palestinian man died on Sunday at a flying checkpoint Israeli forces erected in the northern West Bank, the man's family said.

Adel Muhammad Amarnah, 65, was being rushed to a Jenin hospital when his car was stopped at a checkpoint near the village of Yaabad, his family told Ma'an.

An Israeli soldier told the driver of the car to "go back where he came from," the family said. After being held up for an extended period of time, the driver finally convinced the soldier to let the car through the checkpoint.

But Amarnah died before he reached Jenin's public hospital, where the doctors confirmed his death, his family said.
